Hello and welcome to today’s news from Japan Daily News on May 6th, 2024. In our first news story, a forest fire in Nanyo, Yamagata, has been raging for the fourth consecutive day. The Self-Defense Forces have resumed firefighting activities using helicopters.

Moving on to our second story, an arrest has been made in the Tochigi murder case where the bodies of a married couple were found. The joint investigation team of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police and the Tochigi Prefectural Police arrested the common-law husband of the couple’s daughter on suspicion of damaging the bodies. The common-law husband had been assisting the couple in their restaurant business, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police suspect that he played a leading role in the crime.

In other news, Brazil’s southern region is facing record-breaking heavy rains, resulting in the death of 83 people and over 100 people missing.

As we start the week after the Golden Week holidays, rain and strong winds are expected in the Tokai and Kinki regions, which may affect transportation. Please take caution.

Tragic news from Gunma, where a truck collided with two cars in Isesaki. A 2-year-old boy, his father, and his grandfather, who were in one of the cars, tragically lost their lives.

Returning to the forest fire in Nanyo, Yamagata, the firefighting efforts on the third day were unsuccessful in extinguishing the fire, and it continues to spread. Firefighters and other authorities will resume firefighting activities on the seventh day.

Another accident involving a truck and two cars occurred in Isesaki, Gunma. Two people lost their lives, including a 2-year-old boy, and five people were transported to the hospital.
